Mayim Aquatic Centre
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
G architects is serving as the lead architectural consultant for the redevelopment and pool addition at Kayla’s Children Centre in Vaughan, Ontario. The project introduces a purpose-built natatorium designed to enhance therapeutic programming, recreation, and wellness opportunities for children and youth with special needs.
The 7,500-square-foot addition features a double-height pool hall enclosing a 30’ × 60’ therapeutic pool with both ramped and stepped entry, ensuring universal accessibility. A new single-storey wing integrates supporting change rooms, washrooms, and service spaces, while a 1,500-square-foot basement accommodates mechanical and pool equipment. Together, these new facilities complement Kayla’s existing building and expand the organization’s ability to deliver inclusive aquatic therapy, life skills programs, and community recreation.
Developed in collaboration with Acapulco Pools as Design Builder, the project advances Kayla’s mission to create safe, adaptive, and joyful environments that support growth and belonging. With a focus on accessibility and sensory comfort, the design incorporates warm, daylight-filled interiors, acoustic treatment, and efficient air handling systems that promote well-being for users and staff alike.

CHALLENGES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS
A key challenge of the project was integrating a complex, double-height natatorium within the constraints of the existing site and building, ensuring seamless functional and aesthetic continuity. G architects worked closely with the client, design builder, and consultant team to align technical requirements—such as structural spans, HVAC and dehumidification systems, and water treatment—with the architectural vision for a calm, therapeutic environment.
Another challenge involved balancing municipal approvals and construction timelines to meet the goal of opening the facility by Fall 2019. Through proactive coordination and clear communication with the City of Vaughan, G architects successfully advanced the project through Site Plan and Building Permit stages, maintaining schedule alignment and design integrity.
The Kayla’s Children Centre Natatorium stands as an accomplishment in inclusive community design, expanding the organization’s capacity to deliver accessible aquatic therapy and recreation. The new pool addition reinforces Kayla’s role as a leader in special needs programming, creating an uplifting space that celebrates participation, progress, and care.
