G has been the architect for a number of premium retail brands, including Hermes, Moncler, COS, and Tommy Bahama. For these clients, we understand the importance of the brand identity and good collaboration with the brands’ designers. We bring additional value to the project by managing the exterior and building envelope design, applying for building permits, and monitoring construction.
With many of the brands we work with based outside of Canada, we provide additional value by sourcing local suppliers for systems or products used in the design language, and adapting the intent to suit the Ontario Building Code. For Tommy Bahama in Sherway Gardens, G delivered the project with a high level of project management and client representation, negating the need for on-site representation from the brand’s Seattle-based team.
We are well versed in the challenges of design and construction projects within existing, occupied buildings. We have managed the design and construction of renovation projects for the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, the City of Toronto, and the Toronto Parking Authority.
Our strategy for institutional renovation projects is to maximize the potential of the existing conditions, and focus the construction budget on key design features that will refresh the space in a cost effective manner. The renovations to the Rotman School of Management will provide a modern office space for new programs in the existing North Building, integrating the existing finishes with the new architectural language of the South Building.
At the core of economic, social and environmental sustainability is the redevelopment of existing buildings with a new life. We have had the opportunity to work with landlords to transform and re-imagine their existing building assets. Our knowledge help clients navigate the challenges of building remediation and restoration.
Our experience includes the conversion of an existing 4-storey brick and beam building into a new home for the Toronto School of Art, and the restoration of Tweel Corners in Charlottetown, a 4-storey heritage building renovated for retail and office use. Working directly with the building owner, we developed a renovation plan that restored the masonry work, rebuilt the mansard with a contemporary language.
